Albemarle County Virginia has been a well-known farming community
since the mid-1700s and still remains one today albeit more horse farms than cattle and swine. And you'll not find
any finer farms anywhere than here in Albemarle County Virginia. We can merrily boast that our Albemarle
County farms are right up there with Middleburg and Lexington, Kentucky's.
Most of the farms here are very historic and were probably owned
by either Nicholas Lewis, Meriwether Lewis's father, or Peter Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson's strapping 6'5"
father. Both men were early Albemarle landowners who saw the wonderful value and beauty then.
To buy a farm in Albemarle County today with at least 20 acres
will set you back a minimum of $2,000,000. So don't come to this neck of the woods thinking you'll find a deal.
This is like buying Greenwich Ct. or Bernardsville, N.J. farms.
The three best places to purchase a farm in Albemarle County are
in Keswick, then Earlysville then Free Union. The Keswick Road is known as the Third Most Scenic Road In
America primarily for all the wonderful farms. Keswick is where Thomas Jefferson lived at his plantation known as
Shadwell. Shadwell burned to the ground when he was twelve. Tom's slave got out with his violin and
homework.
A farm in Earlysville and Free Union offers majestic Blue Ridge
Mountain views and about 25% less than a Keswick farm.
Why? Because you may have neighbors next to you on a half acre
plot. This happens a lot in Central Virginia and slave states. The original landowner would give a small plot to
his trusted employees (for share cropping or years of dedicated service) and low and behold today there's a small
brick rancher on the lot and Dotty is sitting inside watching Oprah.
George Washington spent time here as a surveyor under the employ
of land magnate, Lord Fairfax a favorite of George III. Thomas Jefferson built both Monticello and The University
of Virginia in the early ninetieth century. James Monroe lived near Thomas Jefferson at Ashlawn (now owned by
William & Mary)...Just to name a few.
So if you love history, mild temperatures and horses then
consider purchasing an Albemarle County farm.
