There was substantial disagreement over the boundaries of the Northern Neck Proprietary. In 1730 Fairfax's son, also named Thomas, got into a
legal wrangle with Virginia over the extent of his domain, its size being defined by the location of two rivers whose sources were unknown at the
time Charles had made his grant. Fairfax argued that the Rapidan River was the real Rappahannock, thus enlarging the proprietorship. Incredibly,
he won his case in 1745, throwing into tumult the legal status of land granted by Virginia in the fork of the Rappahannock. Many residents
repatented under Fairfax. Others ended up in court.
English explorers crossed into the Shenandoah Valley and into the New River Valley by the 1670's. However, English settlement in Virginia did
not push upstream across the Fall Line until the 1700's. Governor Spottswood led his "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" up the Rappahanock River
(his personal focus of speculation) to the Shenandoah River in 1716. Spottswood was not exploring for a mythical Northern Passage or to purchase
furs for trading; he was loooking for land to buy and sell.
NVCT has been instrumental in preserving 384 acres of globally rare forest in western Fairfax County. This conservation success was made
possible by a grant from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation and a commitment from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
In 1948 the records of the Land Office, which were then in the custody of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, were transferred to the State
Library and, by Act of Assembly, March 5, 1952, the duties of the Register of the Land Office were transferred from the Secretary of the
Commonwealth to the State Librarian. Following the reorganization of the Land Office, the localities were charged with the issuing of titles to
vacant lands, while the state only issued grants for escheated lands, primarily for non-payment of taxes.

This collection consists of recorded copies of grants issued for land in the Northern Neck from 1692 to 1862 when the territory encompassing
the present state of West Virginia withdrew from the Commonwealth to enter the Union. The formation of West Virginia eliminated the major source
of available land in Virginia. Eighteen additional instruments dated as late as 1874 were entered in the final volume before these books were
closed. Gaps in the records exist for the period 1719–1722 and 1732–1736. Following the recitation of the ownership of the Northern Neck are the
name of the grantee, the description of the land, any reservations for the proprietor, and the date on which the grant was signed.
After Thomasson�s death on March 29 1950, his daughters, Elizabeth Kline, Agnes Huffman, Claudia Compton, and Sallie Ball, sold the farm,
livestock, and equipment to George Dickerson. An inventory of personal property sold highlights the types of livestock and equipment used to
operate the farm. Both motorized and horse drawn farm equipment reflects industrial advances during the period he operated the farm. The
Dickerson family held the farm for ten years before selling the land to development in 1960.
Thus the physical geography of Northern Virginia provided the opportunity for George Washington to become recognized initially. In 1753 Lord
Dinwiddie, the colonial governor residing in Williamsburg, recognized that the French plans to build forts in the Ohio Valley would isolate
Virginia from the interior of the continent. If the French could establish effective control from Quebec to New Orleans, the future expansion of
English settlement would be prohibited - and Lord Dinwiddie's economic speculation in western land grants would be worthless. Washington was
chosen to deliver the demand from Dinwiddie in November, 1753 that the French withdraw from the Forks of the Ohio (today's Pittsburgh).
This collection of records comprise original plats and accompanying papers relative to land grants made by the commonwealth after 1786 for
land in the Northern Neck. Since there was a delay between the issuance of the first document, the warrant, and the final one, the grant, some of
the documents predate 1786. The materials are arranged in folders labeled with the name of the grantee, the names of all persons who owned the
warrant or survey, the county in which the land was situated when the grant was issued, the date of the survey and warrant, the number of acres
in the grant, and the number of items in the folder. These documents have not been microfilmed.
This group of documents consists of recorded plats and descriptions of land in the Northern Neck for which grants were issued by the
commonwealth's Land Office after 1786. Marginal notes indicate the date the survey was received into the office as well as the date the grant was
issued. A few surveys for grants issued as late as 1874 are entered. These documents are available online and on microfilm.
These items consist of the field notes and plats of tracts in the New Creek, Warm Springs, and Sleepy Creek areas of Frederick, now Hampshire,
County surveyed by Guy Broadwater in 1749. Descriptions of the quality of the land are frequently given, together with information about the
persons for whom the land was surveyed. Grants for most of these tracts have been located in the Northern Neck Land Office records, and this
information has been included.
