Washington and Lee University was founded in 1749.
It is a four-year liberal arts college with a well-respected law school.
George Washington endowed the school with 100 shares of James River Company stock in 1796.
This gift saved the school from closing. Robert E. Lee became president of the college after the Civil War in 1865.
Because of his prestige and influence it became a university of national stature. After his death in 1870 it was renamed in
recognition of his devotion and service.
The Lee House (1869) on the Front Campus was designed by General Lee to be the home of the president of the school.
The neoclassical front campus of the university was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
The Department of the Interior characterized W&L as "one of the most dignified and beautiful college campuses in the
nation."

Thomas Jonathan Jackson is known to the world as "Stonewall" Jackson, the Confederate general who earned his nickname for his
stand at First Manassas and is best known for his brilliant leadership in the Valley Campaign of 1862.
In Lexington, where Jackson lived and taught for ten years before the Civil War, he was known simply as Major Thomas Jackson, a
professor of Natural Philosophy at Virginia Military Institute.
The Stonewall Jackson House at 8 East Washington Street is the only home that Thomas Jackson ever owned.
It is a modest brick town house, built in 1801, with a mid-century stone addition at the back.
Jackson and his wife, Mary Anna Morrison, moved to the house early in 1859, and shared two years there before he rode off to
war on April 21, 1861, never to return alive.
Lexington is an independent city within the confines of Rockbridge County in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The population was 6,867 at the 2000 census. Lexington is about 55 minutes east of the West Virginia border and is about 50
miles north of Roanoke, Virginia.
It was first settled in 1777.
It is home to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Washington and Lee University.
It is the county seat of Rockbridge County.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Lexington (along with nearby Buena Vista) with Rockbridge County for
statistical purposes.
Stonewall Jackson House, 8 East Washington StreetUnion General David Hunter led a raid on Virginia Military Institute
during the American Civil War.
Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are buried here.
So too was Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury until he was removed to Richmond, Virginia the following spring.
It is also the site of the only house Jackson ever owned, now open to the public as a museum.

Sam Houston, 19th century statesman, politician and soldier, and, as of 2005, the only person in U.S. history to have been the
governor of two different states — Tennessee and Texas — was born near here.
At the Sam Houston Wayside is a 38,000 pound piece of Texas pink granite commemorating Houston's birthplace.

The Rockbridge area, consisting of Rockbridge County, the cities of Lexington and Buena Vista, and the towns of Glasgow and
Goshen, is located in the historic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and near the Blue Ridge Parkway..
Less than an hour north of Roanoke, two hours west of Richmond, and less than three hours southwest of Washington, DC, it is a
wonderful place to live, with scenic mountains and farmlands, national forest borders on the east and west, and four institutions of
higher learning-Virginia Military Institute, Washington & Lee University, Southern Virginia College, and a branch of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.
A modern consolidated high school serves the area's 800 plus students
Rockbridge County was named for the distinctive geological landmark, Natural Bridge, located in the southern portion of the
County.
Created in 1778 from portions of Augusta and Botetourt counties, Rockbridge County has been the home of military strategists
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee, inventor Cyrus McCormick, and pioneer Sam Houston.
Today, Rockbridge County encompasses 607 square miles of diverse, rolling terrain. Within its borders are two incorporated
towns, Glasgow and Goshen, and two independent cities, Lexington and Buena Vista.
Named in honor of the Massachusetts town where the AmericanRevolution began, Lexington was incorporated as a town in 1778,
partially destroyed by fire 18 years later, reconstructed, and eventually chartered as a city in 1966.
Many of the structures that were rebuilt or constructed after the fire of 1796 are officially designated State and national
historical landmarks.
Two of these landmarks, Washington and Lee University, founded in 1749, and Virginia Military Institute, founded in 1839, are
among the oldest and most prominent academic institutions in the nation.
Buena Vista was a focal point of the Shenandoah Valley land "boom" initiated in 1889 by
several land development companies, one of which was the Buena Vista Company.
In less than three years, Buena Vista grew from a sparsely populated rural area to a
town with 19 industries that employed in excess of 1,000 workers.
When incorporated as a city by the Virginia General Assembly in 1892, Buena Vista had a
population of 5,240.
It was during the land "boom" era that Buena Vista assumed its role as an industrial
city, a role it still retains today. Southern Virginia University, is a designated State and National Historic
Landmark.
